The Local SEO Checklist for Small Businesses in Gauteng

Most Gauteng SMBs don't have an SEO problem — they have a 'never set up the basics' problem. Work through this checklist in one afternoon and you'll already be ahead of most of your local competition.

1. Google Business Profile (the #1 priority)

  • Claim the profile at business.google.com
  • Verify by postcard, phone, or video — Google won't show you in the map pack until you verify
  • Pick the most specific category (e.g. 'Solar Energy Contractor', not 'Contractor')
  • Add every service area suburb
  • Upload 10+ real photos
  • Add opening hours, website, WhatsApp number

2. NAP consistency across the web

NAP = Name, Address, Phone. Google cross-references your business listing across the web. If your phone number is '069 370 1199' on your site, '0693701199' on Facebook, and '+27 69 370 1199' on Yellow Pages, Google gets confused and trusts you less. Pick one format and use it everywhere.

3. South African citation sites

List your business on Snupit, Brabys, Hotfrog ZA, Yellow Pages ZA, and your industry-specific directories (e.g. SAPVIA for solar). Each consistent citation is a small trust signal.

4. On-page basics

  • Town/suburb mentioned in the page title, H1, and meta description
  • A 'Contact' page with a real address (Google Maps embed is a nice bonus)
  • Mobile-friendly site that loads in under 3 seconds
  • HTTPS (free with most hosts)
  • LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema

5. Reviews — the multiplier

Reviews influence both rankings AND click-through rate. A business with 50 reviews at 4.7 stars gets clicked far more often than one with 6 reviews at 5.0. Build a process to ask every happy customer for a review within 48 hours of the job.

6. Local content

Publish one piece of genuinely local content per month — a case study from a Randburg install, a guide to load shedding schedules in your suburb, comparison of two service options. This signals to Google that you're an active local business, not a dormant listing.
