Why Your Johannesburg Business Isn't Ranking on Google (And How to Fix It)

I get this question constantly from Johannesburg business owners: 'I have a website but I'm not showing up on Google.' In 90% of cases, it's one of seven specific problems. Here's how to figure out which one is yours.

1. Your site has no keywords on it

Open your homepage and read it. Do the words 'Johannesburg', 'Gauteng', your suburb, and your service appear naturally? If your homepage just says 'Welcome to our website. We offer quality solutions.' — Google has nothing to work with.

2. Your title tags are generic

Right-click your homepage → View Page Source → search for <title>. If it says 'Home', 'Welcome', or just your business name, you're missing a free ranking signal. Title tags should follow: 'Service in Suburb | Business Name'.

3. No Google Business Profile

For local searches ('plumber near me', 'solar installer Sandton'), the Google Business Profile map pack matters MORE than your website. No profile = invisible.

4. The site is too new

Google takes 3-6 months to fully trust a new domain. If your site went live last week, that's normal — but you should still set everything up correctly now so you rank as soon as Google does start trusting you.

5. No sitemap submitted to Google Search Console

Google has to find your pages before it can rank them. A sitemap.xml file submitted via Search Console tells Google every URL on your site. Without one, Google might never find half your pages.

6. The site is slow or not mobile-friendly

Run your site through pagespeed.web.dev. If it scores under 60 on mobile, Google will deprioritise it. South African mobile data is expensive — slow sites get bounced fast.

7. You're targeting impossible keywords

'Web design' is impossible to rank for as a new business. 'Web design Johannesburg' is hard but doable. 'Web design for solar installers in Johannesburg' is realistic. Pick keywords matched to your authority level.

Quick diagnostic

  • Google 'site:yourdomain.co.za' — if it shows zero results, you're not indexed at all
  • Google your business name in quotes — if you don't appear, you have a much bigger problem
  • Check pagespeed.web.dev — fix anything red
  • Check search.google.com/search-console — submit a sitemap if you haven't
