The 12-Point SEO Checklist Every South African Small Business Should Complete
Small business SEO in South Africa is not complicated — it's just neglected. Complete every item below and you'll be ahead of most competitors in your suburb inside 90 days.
The 12-point checklist
- 1. Every page has a unique <title> tag under 60 characters, with your primary keyword first
- 2. Every page has a unique meta description between 140-160 characters that reads like a real sentence
- 3. Every page has exactly one <h1> tag, matching search intent
- 4. Every image has descriptive alt text (not 'IMG_0294.jpg')
- 5. Your site loads in under 2.5 seconds on mobile (test at pagespeed.web.dev)
- 6. You have a verified Google Business Profile with your real address, hours, and 10+ reviews
- 7. Your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) is identical across your site, GBP, Facebook and directories
- 8. LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema on your homepage and contact page
- 9. An XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
- 10. A robots.txt that isn't accidentally blocking Googlebot
- 11. At least one dedicated page per major suburb or region you serve
- 12. Fresh content — a blog post or news update at least once a month
Which ones matter most?
If you can only do three: Google Business Profile (item 6), suburb pages (item 11), and speed (item 5). Those three alone will beat 80% of South African SMEs in your category.
How long does it take?
All 12 items are typically a 2-3 week job for an agency, or a solid weekend if you're technical and doing it yourself. Rankings usually start moving 6-8 weeks after the work is complete, and compound from there.
